Christopher Howell has been at the helm of winemaking team at Cain Vineyard & Winery since 1990. His vast experience of working at some of the top estates in Europe (Chateau Mouton-Rothschild) and California (Peter Michael, Clos du Val) allows him to continuously create very structured and polished wines from traditional Bordeaux varietals.
The steeply terraced vineyards of Cain, located on the Spring Mountain are the source for the flagship wine Cain Five (2004 @ $128 per bottle at Winestone). Some of the wine that does not meet the strict criteria for the Cain Five cepage is then blended with other lots from Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville and Atlas Peak. A small percentage of previous year's harvest (about 4% of the 2004) is also included. The final result is an affordable meritage of 49%Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits ripe, silky texture along with smooth tannins. Only available once a year and the time is now.
